I have a problem with reconciling the fact that we are made in the image of God yet the scriptures teach that we are totally depraved. If we each have the image of God, wouldn’t a small part of us seek Him? However, we are taught that none seek after Him.
I have lived long enough to learn and know that I, myself, and mankind are depraved, but if we are made in His image, would there not be a tiny part of us that would search for the true God and recognize Him? Is it that we are so depraved that the nature of God in us is overwhelmed? Thus we do not seek for Him?
I am sorry to trouble you, but I would greatly appreciate your insight or any links or information that could show me my error in understanding soI can be in line with correct scriptural doctrine. If you do not have time to respond, I understand.
And thank you so much for the Bible Study Podcast. I hope you never grow too old to produce this podcast. It is truly invaluable.
Think of it this way. Think of the proud father holding his baby boy and everyone says “that baby is the spitting image of you”. Picture a loving father, a mature and godly man.
Why does no one say, “that child can’t possibly be yours, look how self-centered he is. He wakes you up in the middle of the night just because he wants something. Never mind that you were asleep. He cries until he gets his way. You would never do that.”?
No we recognize in that child both the likeness and the potential but also the current totally self absorbed state of the baby. We trust that will change in the hands of and with the direction of a loving father.
Does that help at all?
Thank you so much for your quick and clear response. I read about total depravity but your illustration really illuminated how we can both have God’s likeness while still being tainted at heart…and how we need the grace of our loving Father.
Thank you again. Your answer was extremely helpful!
I give thanks to the Lord for these continuous sharing of such nutricous messages through you. May i know which version of Bible you are based on? I was searching nkj, kjv, asv, esv…but none these are following the version you read. It would be great if u could clarify my confusion. Thank you!
I am using the NIV (New International Version)
